Kuari Pass Trek was explored by Lord Curzon when the British ruled India. It is a perfect Trek for Beginners which lies in the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 4,264 meters. The Kuari Pass trek is a popular trekking route in the Indian Himalayas, known for its breathtaking views of several prominent peaks including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Dronagiri, Kamet, Hathi Ghodi Parvat, and Mana. It’s located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India.

During the day the temperature of Kuari pass is around Winter temperature is -3°C to -5 °C and during the night the temperature comes down to -5 °C to -15 °C which is not bad.

Summer may ot june months temperature is 8 °C to 15 °C and during the night the temperature comes down to 5 °C to 12°C which is not bad. this is very good for summer trek kuari pass.

How is the difficulty level kuari pass

Kuari Pass Trek is a very beautiful winter or summer trek and an uphill trek in the Uttarakhand Himalayas, The Kuari pass Trek is great for those people who have a great passion for mountaineering and consider it a special purpose in their life. Despite the fact that the top is relatively low in elevation, we recommend physical endurance and a strong fitness record.

You have to travel 544 kms from Dehradun to Joshimath and return Joshimath to Dehradun by taxi and 33 kms on foot from Dhak Village to kuari pass summit 12516 Feet and back to Joshimath.

These treks are not very difficult but you can, we are doing it for the last 30 years, some people come from all over the world who have their own fitness level and all people easily do trek to Kuari pass.

Don’t think much, dedicate yourself to nature, it will be easy for you, and always take the help of your trek leader, wake up in the morning during the trek, do some yoga and pranayam per day morning.

When does snowfall start in Kuari Pass trek?

In the Kuari pass trek, especially snowfall time occurs only in December, but sometimes it happens in early November as well, it is seasonal. By the way, if it rains sometimes even in October, then the Kuari pass trek Summit becomes snowfall, but I do not know much longer. The snow that falls from 15th December lasts for a long time. Kuari pass trek has the highest snowfall in the months of January and February, which lasts till the last of May, and does not melt easily.

Major Attractions of the Kuari Pass Trek

Tugasi: The trek begins from Tugasi, with the unique itinerary, where the adventure truly takes flight. As you start your steady ascent, the trail gently weaves through ancient oaks, their branches heavy with snow. It’s here that you first catch sight of the snow-covered paths stretching ahead, with expansive mountain views peeking through the treetops. The soft crunch of snow under your boots set the tone for the days to come.

Talli Forest: Moving forward, you enter the Talli Forest, a magical place where every step feels like wandering into a kingdom of snow. Towering pine and oak trees rise around you, their trunks dusted with snow, while sunlight occasionally filters through the dense canopy, casting patterns on the ground. The quiet here is profound, broken only by the sounds of your footsteps and the occasional chirp of a hidden bird. It's a place that invites you to pause, take a deep breath, and truly feel the peace of the wilderness.

Kuari Pass: You will climb higher, and the trail opens up to Kuari Pass, a vantage point that feels like the roof of the world. From here, the vast expanse of the Himalayas unfolds in all directions, with the peaks standing tall. It’s a perfect spot to rest, and marvel at the majesty that surrounds you, a view that makes every step of the climb worthwhile.

Gorson Bugyal: As you return, you will pass through Gorson Bugyal, an alpine meadow. TTH incorporates this route to let trekkers experience its beauty. In winter, this vast land is covered in a blanket of snow, glistening under the sun. The meadow shows a stunning contrast to the dense forests below. From here you will get to witness the best views of Nanda Devi peak. Standing there, surrounded by nothing but snow and sky, you can't help but feel a deep relaxation.

Who Can Participate

Age Requirement:

April to November: 10 years.

December to March: 12 years.

First-timers are welcome, though prior trekking experience is preferred. Good fitness is a must.

Fitness Criteria:

The Trekker should have sufficient stamina to cover 5 km of distance by jogging in 33 minutes without stress or 10 km of distance in 75 minutes without stress

If the trekker prefers cycling he/she should be able to cycle 15 km of distance in 45 minutes .

If the trekker wants to carry a backpack then he/she should be able to carry a 10-12 kg backpack. If opt Off-load option then the trekker should be able to carry 3-5 kg backpack.

If a trekker's BMI is more or less than the normal range (18-28), please consult our Trek Coordinator before booking.

Faq's
  • Distance: 256 km
    Time: 10 hours
  • Your very first day of the trip will start from the spiritual city Rishikesh. This day's destination will be 256 km away from Rishikesh, i.e. Joshimath. At first, you will cross Rishikesh and other scenic Himalayan towns along the way. Rishikesh, known for yoga, spirituality, and adventure sports like rafting and bungee jumping, sets a perfect start for your Himalayan journey.
  • Though you will travel a lot on your first day, you will never feel exhausted due to the overwhelming sights during the journey. The whole journey will contribute a lot of memories to your cameras and heart as well. As you pass by the various places in order to reach Joshimath, you will see the river at your one side constantly. We can not call this river by one name as at every Prayag of Panchprayag you will see the confluence of various rivers.
  • Hence, by following beautiful sights you will not even realize when you reached Joshimath. Lunch will be served during the journey only. Stay here overnight.
  • Distance: 12 km (drive) & 6 km (trek)
    Time: 4 hours
  • Your next day will be towards Gulling Top where you will proceed by taxi for 12 km to Dhak Village and then will trek for about 6 km. Joshimath comes in cold places so make sure to bring your warm clothes too. The morning at Joshimath will give you a great feeling of satisfaction and peace. You will see snow-covered mountains all around you that will make you feel like you are in heaven. Your trek will start at Dhak village. You will see Sleeping Lady Mountain which looks like it is designed intentionally but it's a miracle of nature. Although the trek is an easier one, there are little ups and downs during the trek.
  • You will come across various gentle slopes. The terrain over here is usually rough and not green. You will see Dhauli Ganga flowing nearby. Soon, you will reach Kharchi village. You may fill your water bottles in between the trek. After walking for some time, you will reach the Upper Tugasi region where you will see wheat fields, flower beds, and much more. Water streams flowing in between the trek will make you feel refreshed.
  • Soon, you will have to cross a steep ascent from where you will be able to have a great sight view of Dronagiri peak. There are meadows all around and you will set up your tents in these meadows and will stay here overnight.
  • The sound of the burbling stream is mellifluous and offers natural music to your ears. Do observe two wooden bridges on the way. It is an indication that you have reached Posla, where one of the routes takes a detour to Hargaon. You may also wait and enjoy tea at Jainole Thach.
  • Distance: 4 km (trek)
    Time: 5 hours
  • Your third day will be a trek to Khullara Top which is a 4 km distance. The trek may take about 5 hours. After waking up early in the morning and having a delicious breakfast amidst the beautiful meadow, you will step forward towards your trek. This trek will take you through scenic meadows and oak forests. This day's trek will be smoother and gentler in comparison to the previous one.
  • After walking for some time, you will come across various snow-covered peaks around you. You will see walnut trees and many other varieties. Apart from trees, you will also see beautiful flowers blooming all your way.
  • You will be at a great height after your trek ends. In between the mountains covered with thick snow and forests, you will stay in your tents overnight at Khullara Top. It will be exciting to stay over here.
  • Distance: 15 km (trek)
    Time: 11 hours
  • On your fourth day you will trek to Kuari Pass and on the same day will come back to Khullara Top. This day's trek will cover 15 km and will take around 11 hours. Start early in the morning to reach Kuari Pass on time. Do carry enough water as you may not find any water source on this day's trek.
  • As the trek is long, you may take short breaks in between. Lunch will be served midway. This is recommended that you wear good quality trekking shoes so that you do not face any difficulty in rough terrain. After reaching Kuari Pass peak, you will witness several peaks like Kedarnath Peak, Chaukhamba, Nanda Ghunti, Kalinka, Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, Kamet, Mukut Parvat, and many more.
  • The view from the pass is unmatched and makes the entire effort worthwhile. Return to Khullara Top for an overnight stay.
  • Distance: 8 km (trek) & 13 km (drive)
    Time: 7 hours
  • On your fifth day, you will descend from Khullara Top to Dhak Village via Gurson Bugyal and Auli. Gurson Bugyal offers an easy, picturesque trail with panoramic views of Himalayan peaks. You will cross it effortlessly and enjoy every moment.
  • After reaching Auli, you can explore the snow valley and enjoy skiing if it’s open at the time. Later, drive back to Joshimath for an overnight stay.
  • Distance: 256 km drive
    Time: 10 hours.
  • Finally, the day to end the beautiful Kuari Pass trek. You will drive back to Rishikesh from Joshimath covering the same 256 km route, cherishing memories of this amazing Himalayan adventure.

How to Reach Kuari Pass

By Air

The nearest airport to Kuari Pass is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, located about 35 km from Rishikesh. There are daily flights from Delhi to Dehradun. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Rishikesh (approx. 1 hour).

By Train

Rishikesh and Haridwar are the nearest railway stations to start the Kuari Pass trek. It’s recommended to take an overnight train from Delhi:

  • Nanda Devi Express - Train no: 12205 (Departure: 11:50 PM, Arrival: 5:40 AM at Haridwar)
  • Dehradun Express - Train no: 12687 (Departure: 9:10 PM, Arrival: 5:00 AM at Haridwar)

From Haridwar or Rishikesh, taxis and shared cabs are available for Joshimath.

By Bus

There are regular bus services from Delhi to Rishikesh and Haridwar from ISBT Kashmere Gate.

We recommend taking only government buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate. Private buses outside ISBT are not reliable.

From Rishikesh, shared jeeps and private taxis are available for Joshimath (approx. 9–10 hours drive).
